Welcome back to my page! Today I thought I would switch things up and talk about something that is a little bit more personal than my usual beauty review posts. I feel that I have strayed away from talking about what has been going on in my personal life because I am still trying to figure it all out. This post is going to talk about my Post-Grad experience.

Remember, everyone's situation is different. My experience may not be the same as yours.
My graduation (May 2017) was one of the happiest moments of my life. I was already a super senior and was really beating myself up about not graduating as class of 2016, as I originally was supposed to. Sadly, due to sub par grades, major health issues, and my psychological state, I was unfortunately forced to stay an additional year. Finally getting the "okay" to graduate lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders, but I still had a lot of underlying anxiety about this happy moment.

What was I afraid of?
Although the hurdle of graduation was lifted, I still had so many concerns about what post-grad life would entail. Would I find a job? Where would I live? Will my relationships I've acquired the past 5 years be lost? How will my relationship with my parents be? Have I failed them because of the route I chose was not the ideal route they wanted for me? How will I pay off my loans?? I was scared. I voiced my concerns with my significant other and my sister a multitude of times, and although their words were comforting in the moment, the anxiety always creeped its way back to the forefront of my mind. I had no idea what I would do with my life.

My Health
My parents were really hounding on me to get a job and it triggered a few panic attacks and I even had to go to the doctors for falling occasionally. My body would go cold and numb, my breathing was sporadic, I would black out and find myself on the floor shaking and gasping for air.  My health was bad and I needed to take back control. I learned that patience is a virtue and that I can do only so much until it is literally out of my hands. Why the fuck am I stressing so much if I cannot do anything about it?? Applying to jobs taught me that very important lesson. You as an individual can do everything you can possibly do, but once it is out of your hands, it is no longer on you anymore. That very important lesson helped ease my mind and my anxiety. I asked myself everyday "Is there anything else you can do?" If not, then I will just relax. There is no shame in relaxing; What is the point of being anxious and worried if you cannot do anything about it?

Summer 2017
After graduation, I decided to go on a vacation with some college friends to Mexico. It was much needed and very deserved. We all worked so hard to get to this moment and we needed to celebrate. Once I got home from my little week long getaway, best believe I was applying to jobs left and right. Shoot, I think I even applied to a few places while I was in the jacuzzi in our hotel room! During this summer, I also did a lot of traveling with my family. This was one of the best summers for us as we got to really bond during this time.  My family and I took a road trip to Massachusetts for a wedding, and then made our way up to Bar Harbor, Maine for some family time.

The Interview
Ironically enough on the last and final day of our vacation in Maine (August 8th, 2017), I received the email that got me to where I am today. I secured a job interview at a company I had been eyeing for some time. I specifically advised my parents that I refused to settle for a dead end job and wanted to secure a position at a company I would actually want to stay with, so this was exciting news. I had to go through two rounds of interviews and was ultimately offered the position which started 2 weeks later. I am very grateful for this position, although it is not what I want long-term for my career, it opened plentiful doors of opportunity for me and has been a major learning experience.

What Now?
Putting in the time at my company has definitely paid off. I have voiced to everyone that I know that I would be most interested in going back to school to obtain my Master's Degree. I wanted to continue schooling after obtaining my bachelors, but unfortunately was not able to afford to take out any additional loans. After being an employee here for a year, I was able to work with my company to do a University Partnership Program. I was accepted and now I am working towards obtaining my M.S in Healthcare Administration with Leadership Studies, at no cost! It feels like everything fell
right into place and just goes to show that everything happens for a reason.

What I Took From This
Everything will be okay. Whether you get a job right after college or get a job a year after you graduate; Everything will be okay. As long as you know you are doing everything you need to accomplish on your end, there is no need to worry. I learned to take control of my thoughts and my worries, it helped me get through a lot of bad spells. Because my family has witnessed how my stress has been affecting me so much, they have become more understanding of me and my internal struggles. I happily still live in my parents basement, (its a really nice ass basement btw!), which they were adamant on me staying to save money and has helped me developed a new, adult relationship with my parents. Maintaining adult friendships tends to get more difficult due to everyone being spread out and with busy schedules, but we have all made time to make it work and understand each other's busy lives. Post-Grad life is not easy, but it helps to hear how other people have felt and what they have been through to share that they are not alone in feeling how they feel. My story is my own and I hope that this has helped anyone out there feel that they are not alone during this time.
Be patient and be kind with yourself!
Happy Valentines Day everyone!

I wanted to write this blog post to remind us of a person we all tend to neglect every now and then. A person we know who deserves the best, but is constantly being sacrificed for the sake of others. A person who is worthy of all your love. That person is you.

For singles, Valentines day can be a bitter reminder, or an annoyance. For couples, this day can hold onto a lot of expectations for some. But for a day of love, we must remind ourselves that you don't have to wait for someone to give you the love you know you deserve; love yourself more.

I am a believer of treating yourself. To be honest, I probably have been treating myself too much! But, it was one of my New Year resolutions to remind myself to take a step back, relax, and treat myself every now and then. In order to give love, you must love yourself first. How will you be able to give the people you care about all of your love, if you don't have any left for yourself?
Take care of home first!

These are 5 things that you can do to remind yourself that this holiday isn't just about significant others, but about love in every aspect of life. Whether that be self-love and self-care, reminding your friends that they are loved, or spending time with your family.

  1. Spa day - Do not underestimate the power of a spa day, a massage, or getting your nails done. I always feel better after a day at the spa and Groupon always has great deals for this!
  2. Making it a friends day! - Or what I'd like to call Pal-entines Day! Funny how this year V-Day falls on $2 Tuesdays. There are loads of deals going on that you can do with your friends!
  3. Spending time with your family - Remind your family that they are loved. Spend some quality time with them, it will not only make them feel special, but it will make you feel happy as well!
  4. Treat Yo' Self - buy yourself something nice, treat yourself to your favorite meal, pour yourself a glass of wine, run a bath, TREAT YO' SELF hunny!
  5. Words of affirmation - Remember to love yourself. Remember to tell yourself that you deserve the things you ask for in life. Don't ever feel like you have to settle. Above all, remind yourself that you are worthy of your love.
I wish you all a Happy Valentines Day!

As my 23rd birthday is quickly approaching, I wanted to share my story about my new diagnosis and how I found out I was diabetic. It has not been an easy journey and there have been a lot of bad days, but I'm still learning more about this chronic disease and I have faith that I can maintain a healthier lifestyle. I find that I am at an age where I should be at my prime, but instead, I feel that my health is declining at such a young age. I hope this inspires people to remember to take care of themselves, and that their health and well-being should come first. School, work, bills, etc. and more can always wait, but your health won't. It is better to be proactive than reactive and that is something I truly regret, but it's ok, because it is never too late to start taking care of yourself.

Let's take it back to my Spring 2016 semester.
There were days where I would not get out of bed for anything. I could sleep for 12 hours, wake up, and still be tired and I never understood why. I never attended my classes, and it is a miracle that I even managed to pass them. Being constantly lethargic really affected my productivity, my motivation, my social life, and even my relationship. I started to question if I was going through something, I started to think that I was depressed. Towards the end of the semester, I was over everything.

Summer 2016
I was happy that summer was approaching and I could sleep in all I wanted. I took summer courses so I stayed at my apartment and apart from those classes, I just slept. I didn't go out, I didn't see friends, I basically did not have a summer. The only person I really saw was my boyfriend and looking back on that whole summer, I realized we didn't really do much. There was a day when we went to our favorite park for a walk (and play Pokemon haha) and I stopped in my tracks and started breathing very heavily and my chest started pounding. I couldn't breathe and I joked "Wow, I am really out of shape". I thought nothing of it, but my boyfriend was really worried because he pointed out that it wasn't the first time I would start breathing like that.
When I did go home for some time, my parents were really concerned about me and was worried that something was wrong. They kept encouraging me to go to the doctors and get bloodwork done, but I was really stubborn about it. Eventually, they held a ceremony at my house to ward away evil spirits and ask for protection from our ancestors (Yes, kind of dramatic). And to help our family and they even sprinkled in a little prayer for me.
There was a night when I was alone in my apartment and I was laying down, and suddenly, my heart was pounding out of my chest. It felt like I was having the worst anxiety attack ever. It literally felt like my heart was going to explode. But, yet again, I failed to really do anything about it because I was caught up in figuring out my fall schedule. I told myself that I didn't have time for this, I have to focus on school!

Fall 2016
School was starting and all of my focus was on just that. I still haven't been feeling well, constant hot flashes, lethargic, dizziness, and my chest pains, but I brushed all of that aside. I even started developing weird shoulder and back pains, which was constant and painful. I would ask my boyfriend for a massage every night before bed.

Fast forward to October 3rd, I got my period.

As if periods aren't already hell.... Along with the usual period problems, I felt pain in my abdomen, was bloated and was constantly peeing and urinating was painful...I never had one before, but now I understand. UTIs are the WORST. I never ever had a UTI before in my life, and I was SHOOK. It was so annoying, and because I didn't know how to deal with it, it took over my whole day. I ended up taking some cranberry pills and juice as I hear that it helps. Along with that, I drank lots of water. That night, my UTI felt like it was getting better and some of the symptoms went away.

October 4th was the day I woke up feeling absolutely CRAZY.

I did not attend any of my classes that day because I woke up feeling worse than before. I was bloated, was having hot flashes, and I was having some serious back pain. It was Taco Tuesday and my roommates, some friends, and I wanted to go out to drink, eat, and have some fun. Not wanting to be left out, I joined them. We ended up at Chilis and they all noticed that I was chugging waters left and right and we all joked about it. My back pain was persisting, but I didn't want to be the Debbie Downer. When I came home, I did some googling because I just did not feel right. I was having pains on the side of my back, and after some research, I found out that it is called Flank Pain, which is more serious, and that I should go see a doctor. I suspected that it was simply a UTI turned Kidney Infection, which can be fixed with some form of antibiotic. I was hunched over my bed in so much pain, so my sister drove me to the Emergency Room. Upon arrival, I was given a urine test, and explained everything to the doctor on call. I even did a CT scan and an ultrasound because the pain was near my kidneys.

We were there for so long that it was now October 5th.

I was chillin with my IV fluid bags when the doctor came to talk to me.

Doctor:
"Everything looks normal, but after running some tests, we noticed that your blood sugar was 400."

Me:
"..ok"

Doctor:
"Basically, even if a person were to eat an entire cake and check their blood sugar after, it wouldn't even be that high. You should be in a coma right now"

Me:
"...........oh......"

Through the blood work, they found that my Hemoglobin A1c was 10.6 (should be under 7.00%)
Meaning that my blood sugar averaged about 258 for the past three months.

I really did not know how I was supposed to react or feel. My dad and my maternal grandmother has diabetes, but I didn't really think much of it until then. Everything made sense from there. It explained how I was feeling the past couple of months and it was a lot to take in. Even other doctors that I have been seeing were shocked to see that someone my age (22) developed Type 2 diabetes. Usually, in young people, Type 1 is more prominent. One of the doctors said to me,
"If someone told me a 22-year-old developed type 2, I would think that person is morbidly obese!"
I am 5'2 weighing about 150 lbs. I am a bit overweight for my height, but I am not obese!

Since then, I've been in and out of doctors, seeing my primary physician on campus, my endocrinologist, and going to diabetes education with my nutritionist/dietician. I will be writing another blog about the medication that I am taking, my new diet, and workout routine. This is just a post about the events that led up to my diagnosis, but it was quite the journey reevaluating everything. I never really thought about how serious diabetes was, it is, after all, a chronic disease, but I am learning more about it and how it affects me and how I will have to manage it for the rest of my life.

There is no cure for diabetes, but it is manageable. You make the conscious decision of what you put into your body and how you take care of it. You can live a normal life as long as you manage it well. That is one thing I am glad for. It has forced me to be mindful of the foods I eat and to be one with my own body. I now know what it feels like to have a low or high blood sugar and I can differentiate the signs and be proactive to it. I've had blood sugars close to 500, and blood sugars as low as 50. I am learning to understand my body and reacting to when I don't feel well. I am learning to put myself first and to take care of me. I hope this post was helpful and gave you some inspiration to take care of yourself first!
